What a Registered Dietitian Learned Using a Continuous Glucose Monitor for 2-Weeks
This past month, Abbott gave Dietitians of Dallas staff the opportunity to try their new continuous glucose monitor (CGM), Lingo. CGMs use a small sensor under the skin to provide 24/7 feedback on blood glucose levels. This particular product is designed for those without diabetes looking to improve their health. I will admit, I was a little skeptical to try it. As a dietitian who focuses on intuitive eating, I was worried an app would detract from my ability to keep that focus during meals.
Here is what I loved about Lingo:
Seeing really is believing! It was amazing to visualize the positive impact of protein, fiber, and physical activity on blood glucose control. I could also see the significant differences in blood sugar spikes with carb-heavy meals and meal skipping. While you are encouraged to log meals and exercise, there is no calorie counting. I love the emphasis on overall health and nutrients consumed, not just calories in/calories out.
Having the CGM truly encouraged me to keep regular mealtimes, reach for that protein at snack time, walk a couple extra blocks with the dog, and question my biological hunger levels when I wanted a nighttime snack.
Blood glucose management plays an enormous role in overall health and preventing metabolic disease.
Based on my experience, I think CGMs can be an amazing short-term tool for patients hoping to get more insight about their body (and to help us dietitians personalize your nutrition care plan!)or a more long-term tool alongside individualized nutrition support for patients with prediabetes, PCOS, menopause, or those looking to improve athletic performance.
I am excited to see how this product and those similar will be used to provide more individualized care for our patients and help them achieve their nutrition goals!
