Herbal & Botanical Supplements

The dietary supplement market in the United States is growing, with values exceeding $ 50 billion annually. Slightly over half of adults use at least one dietary supplement, and these products are often underreported to doctors and other health care professionals. With a variety of health claims being made by supplement manufacturers, how can you know if a product is safe and appropriate for you?

Vitamin and mineral supplementation can be essential for preventing deficiencies in some patients. For example, nearly 95% of the population in the US does not meet their requirements for Vitamin D, as this can be difficult with diet alone. Your dietitian can review lab work and create an individualized regimen for supplementation as needed.

Unlike vitamins and minerals, herbal and botanical supplements are less regulated and typically have weaker research to support their purported health benefits. Additionally, these supplements may have interactions with prescription drugs, poor quality control with impurities or heavy metal contamination, or pose a risk to the liver (our organ that filters most of these substances). It is important to evaluate the risk versus benefit and consider any medical conditions that would contraindicate use. Typically, supplements will be used for short-term use, with appropriate dosing and medical supervision.

It is always important to disclose any dietary supplementation to your dietitian and other healthcare professionals. We will review your full medical history and medication use to make safe, evidence-based recommendations for your care.
